The Ph.D. thesis consisted of two projects. The first project was about hydration of ethylene to ethanol in a continuous technical scale plant, which had been designed and constructed during this project. Various silica carriers, which were provided by an industrial partner, were impregnated with phosphoric acid and tested in the “ethanol plant” at 50-70 bar and 270-300°C. The performance of the catalysts and the change of the catalysts in the reaction were subject of this investigation. The performance of the catalysts was monitored by measuring the ethanol yield by gas chromatography and the pH of the product, which could indicate leeching of phosphoric acid from the catalyst. The catalysts were characterised by 1H-, 29Si- and 31P-MAS–NMR, XRD, ICP, BET and mercury porosity measurement. The second project was sponsored by “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft” (DFG) and was carried out in the scope of Sonderforschungsbereich 442. The title of this project is: “(Entwicklung neuartiger umweltverträglicher Schmierstoffe und Druckübertragungsmittel mit Hilfe chemischer Methoden) Development of new environmentally friendly lubricants and hydraulic fluids with chemical methods”. The aim of this project was the development of new environmentally friendly lubricants and hydraulic fluids based on renewable resources. The starting material consisted of unsaturated fatty acid esters such as e.g. methyl oleate or ethyl linolate. These should be chemically modified, so that the oxidation stability, the lubricating and tribological properties improve and the biodegradability of the new lubricant is maintained. Five new lubricants could be produced by the addition of three different carboxylic acids (formic acid, acetic acid and pivalic acid) to unsaturated fatty acid esters in the presence of acid heterogeneous catalysts. All products could by isolated and identified by GC-MS, IR and 1H - and 13C-NMR. The catalysts involved in the reaction were examined by ICP, BET and 1H-MAS-NMR. Further, the GC-analysis for fatty acid esters was built up and is about to be supplemented by a new HPLC-analysis. An investigation in “Sonderforschungsbereich 442” of the saturated products showed in recent tests a higher oxidation stability and good tribological properties in a spindle bearing test. Examination of the toxicity showed a low toxicological potential and a satisfactory biodegradability. Patents: W.F. Hölderich, U. Keller, J. Fischer, P. Weckes, DE 100 02 515.3 W.F. Hölderich, U.
