This includes both the physical relocation of existing assembly systems and the establishment of new systems in other countries. The main reason for German companies to relocate is the reduction of operating and labour costs. The demand to produce the same products with the same quality and efficiency abroad poses challenges for companies. Successful relocation requires the most effective planning and preparation possible. Using established and well-proven solutions reduces planning and realisation costs, utilises economies of scale, facilitates knowledge transfer and reduces ramp-up times. Assembly systems in Germany serve as a blueprint for this. Nevertheless, there are country-specific factors that affect the performance of the assembly system and to which it must be adapted. Studies from industrial practice show that one of these factors is the cultural difference between the employees working in the assembly system. Existing approaches only examine the influence of culture on the performance of assembly systems in correlation with certain aspects, such as work organization and digitalisation. However, a holistic and systematic identification of the influence of culture and a subsequent adaptation of the assembly system offers potential for relocation projects. To address the challenges and optimise the planning result of assembly system relocation, a model for identifying culture-induced changes in the planning result is developed. For one, it includes a model of the assembly planning procedure for relocations, which is based on the Aachen factory planning procedure. In addition, it contains a model for describing culture-based preferences in the context of assembly planning, which is based on HOFSTEDE's cultural model. By bringing the two models together, 13 points of influence of culture-based preferences are identified and the influence of different culture-based preferences is shown. The overall need for adaptation is determined on the basis of effect chains.
