The encyclopedia 'Buch der Natur' (BdN) by Konrad von Megenberg from the middle of the 14th century serves as a significant example of this genre.Because of the prolific transmission of the BdN, a selected compilation of manuscripts is used to represent the many codices of the work, which were created over centuries, as accurately as possible. As a first step, semantically relevant types of (text) variance are defined. These are suited to focus on probably intended interventions of the medieval scribes and editors. In the following analysis of selected BdN-entries, it turns out that how the work ‘lived‘ in the different codices did not primarily lead to a loss of quality over time or deterioration as it was stated in earlier research. Instead, the texts were apparently enriched with various tendencies to intendedly adjust them to different functional purposes. The exemplary study not only does contribute to the little-researched reception history of the work, but also provides an impetus to expand the research on textual variation in vernacular, non-fictional works of prose.
