abstract = {Strategic decisions are made against the backdrop of
increasingly complex and volatile conditions such as rising
energy prices, supply chain problems or new technological
possibilities. The anticipation of possible effects that
arise for decision-makers as well as the subsequent
determination of suitable alternative actions are the
results of strategic planning. In countries, large
organizations and companies, individual planning processes
are developed and applied for this purpose. Due to a lack of
capacity, this is often not possible in small and
medium-sized enterprises (SME). This dissertation makes a
contribution to provide SME with a strategic planning
process adapted to their needs. For this purpose, the
initial situation regarding strategic planning at SMEs is
analyzed, possible framework conditions and design options
are identified and a planning process is modeled on this
basis. A survey conducted as part of the study revealed that
although SMEs have recognized the importance of strategic
planning, the use occurs with little to no structure. It was
also found that SMEs focus in particular on topics that are
of present, predominantly one-sided economic relevance.
However, for successful, future oriented strategic planning,
a more heterogeneous view must be taken with a focus on
aspects that will be important in the future. The focus on
technological-strategic planning against the background of
sustainability and normative requirements is identified as
an essential aspect of this future oriented, holistic
planning. A corresponding process was developed based on
this knowledge. For the specific process design, parameters
are defined. These are the necessary requirements for
carrying out the process, the desired planning horizon, the
frequency of application, the people involved, the optimum
process duration and the desired type of results. The
planning process based on these parameters is designed in
phases. As the possibilities for a cross-company data basis,
the potential for standardization, the acceptance of
external support and the degree of documentation of the
results vary depending on these phases, different design
options are used in the process phases. Based on individual
objectives selected by the SMEs, the designed planning
process is run though one of eight possible variants. With
its technological and sustainable focus, the strategic
planning process designed in this work considers key future
challenges and opportunities that have been neglected in the
strategic planning of SMEs to date. The largely standardized
process architecture is also adapted in its parameters to
the special requirements and limitations of SMEs. However,
for a holistic view, it is advisable not to use the designed
process in isolation, but to combine it with economic and
                      social science analyses, among others.},
