In this thesis, a concept for a flexible and adaptive mobile robot systems for following people in urban environments is developed, realized and investigated. The sub-aspects of environment perception and state estimation, trajectory planning and automatic parameter exploration of the mobile robot system are considered. Increasing urbanization and the enormous growth rates of e-commerce are leading to an increase in inner-city freight transport, which is competing with the likewise growing individual and public transport for the scarce resource of transport space. These developments are leading to an increasing demand for alternative means of goods transport for inner-city logistics, especially under the change towards car-free inner cities. In this context, autonomous mobile robot systems have the potential to contribute to optimizing the last mile, i.e. the distance between the distribution center and the end customer. One approach involves following systems that transport goods and deliveries while following a person on sidewalks. When operating on the sidewalk, these following systems are subject to special technical challenges, as the environment is shared with many other road users and at the same time the loss of the person to be followed must be avoided. The complexity of modern control and environment perception approaches leads to a high number of parameters, while the exploration of these parameterization is a very time-consuming task and can only be carried out by experienced persons. This results in the need for methods and concepts for automatic parameter exploration and optimization for mobile autonomous robot systems for following persons in urban environments. The central result of this work is a concept for automatic parameter exploration for the state estimation of the person to be followed and the trajectory planning of a mobile robot. The developed concept integrates the three sub-concepts of environment perception and state estimation of the person to be followed, the design of the control engineering framework for trajectory planning and the concept for automatic parameter exploration and optimization. The environment of the robot is perceived by means of heterogeneous sensor systems, the person to be followed is detected and identified and integrated into a state estimation in order to predict future trajectories. On this basis, the control engineering framework calculates trajectories of the mobile robot system according to a multi-criteria optimization function and in compliance with system constraints. The parameterization of the system is based on an automatic parameter exploration using a black-box optimization approach. The concept is implemented, verified and validated within a simulation environment and a real mobile robot system.
