AB - Heat pumps play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector. To minimize both the operating costs and the load on the electricity grids, the efficiency of heat pumps must be as high as possible over the entire operating range. However, the efficiency of heat pumps is influenced by many factors. The main influencing factors include the refrigerant, the components and the used refrigerant cycle. Therefore, this work analyzes the refrigerant, the refrigerant cycle and its components in dependency of the operating point to determine the refrigerant cycle configuration with the highest efficiency. For this purpose, simulation models and a heat pump test bench are developed to evaluate the refrigerant cycle configurations simulatively and experimentally. First, a preselection of refrigerants available on the market is carried out. The preselection provides 39 suitable refrigerants, mainly hydrocarbons (HC) and hydrofluoroolefins (HFO), all of which are at least moderately flammable. Second, the preselected refrigerants are analyzed simulatively and experimentally in four refrigerant cycles. The studies show that the HC lead to on average 10
