Production control (PC) is responsible for the operational execution of manufacturing processes and makes a significant contribution to the competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises. Decision-making in PC is inherently complex and subject to high levels of dynamism. The provision of relevant information is therefore essential to enable well-founded and effective decisions. The use of calculation models generates information from cross-domain company data and enables data-based decision-making. However, the information systems currently used by companies for decision support do not sufficiently meet user requirements. Digital Shadows generate purpose-specific information by applying calculation models to data and thus hold considerable potential for enhancing decision-making within PC. Nevertheless, an analysis of the current state of the art reveals a lack of integrated approaches for the systematic design of digital shadows of PC.The objective of this dissertation is to develop a methodology for the design of Digital Shadows for PC to support decision-making through needs-based information provision. The proposed methodology is structured into four interrelated solution modules. The data module introduces a data model for digital shadows of PC. The information module addresses the derivation of information requirements from decision-making scenarios in PC and their representation within an information model. The calculation model module enables the specification of calculation models using a morphological matrix and their organization within a model catalog. The final component, a top-down-bottom-up approach, integrates the preceding modules and outlines an application-oriented procedure for identifying and linking information demands and supplies for digital shadows in PC. The methodology is validated in practice using case studies.
