abstract = {The importance of partner selection as a constitutive
element of social inequality was already recognized by the
likes of Max Weber. Social characteristics such as
education, religion and age play an important role in
partner selection. Great importance is attributet especially
to the aspect of education in recent social research. How do
these social attributes help explain homogamy / heterogamy?
How has the influence of these characteristics changed over
time? The author gives an overview of the socio-historical
development, theoretical approaches to explain and present
empirical findings on the choice of partners. On this basis,
he analyzes the transformation of the above characteristics
using the SESKI record of the Sociological Institute of the
RWTH Aachen. Based on this analysis, he retraces the current
assumption for the development of mate choice. Structure
theory, Family Economy and Exchange Theory form the basis
for this empirical observation. The book is aimed at family
                      sociologists and interested parties.},
