abstract = {Excessive physical activity is perceived as a significant
clinical feature of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa
which may often raise difficulties in treatment. Eating
disorder patients often demonstrate obligatory, pathological
attitudes towards exercise. The present study aimed to
examine excessive physical activity in adolescents with
eating disorders. Therefore a multidimensional assessment
was realized including assessment of the quantitative and
the qualitative aspects of physical activity. Assessment of
associated features was also conducted. The quantity and
quality of daily physical activity of 46 adolescent
outpatients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and 19
healthy controls were assessed by accelerometry and
self-reports. In addition, eating disorder psychopathology,
general psychopathology and physiologic parameters were
assessed as were motivation for physical activity and
exercise feelings. Contrary to the hypothesis, eating
disorder patients and controls did not differ in the
objectively recorded global physical activity. On a closer
look, however, eating disorder patients reported higher
levels of motor restlessness than controls. Furthermore,
adolescents suffering from an eating disorder differed from
controls in their feelings towards exercising; the patients
showed higher scores of exercise dependence. Concerning
relevant physiological parameters there was evidence of a
negative linear relationship between serum leptin levels and
the level of physical activity in patients with anorexia
nervosa only. In the total eating disorder group there was
                      no significant relationship between further
psychopathological parameters and physical activity. The
results indicated that differences in physical activity
between eating disorder adolescents and healthy controls are
better described in qualitative features rather than in
quantitative domains. Depending on the stage of disease, the
degree and form of physical activity seem to vary; this
conveys methodical difficulties in adequate measurement of
physical activity. Prospective studies are needed for
replicating the present findings and for extracting possible
relevant parameters in the different stages of disease. For
establishing specific interventions, feelings and attitudes
towards exercise should be integrated into diagnostic
                      investigation.},
