abstract = {In the years 1992 to 1998 a number of 59 patients in the
                      department of haematology-oncology of the
university-hospital of the RWTH-Aachen have been treated
with high-dose chemotherapy with following autologous stem
cell transplantation (PBSCT). The high-dose chemotherapy
with autologous stem cell transplantation is a treatment
superior to the conventional chemotherapy in a set of tumor
diseases. The side-effects of a chemotherapy on the
hematopoeisis can be overcome by the autologous stem cell
transplantation, which otherwise often represent the
limiting factor. A complete remission can be achieved by the
possible increase of the dose intensity, at the same time
can the duration of the remission be extended and also
higher healing rates with certain tumor diseases be achieved
at a larger number of patients. The PBSCT is surely feasible
in centers with appropriate experience and machine as well
as personnel equipment. As a possibility of treatment the
PBSCT is accepted by most patients and also in the review in
the very most cases positively judged. A female patient
developed CMV-pneumonia in the consequence of the high-dose
therapy and deceased at day 50 after transplantation
according to a multi-organ failure. At two patients no
sufficient reconstitution of haematopoiesis took place after
the transplantation, so that a second stem-cell return took
place, which led to a full haematological reconstitution. On
30.06.2001 still 23 patients were alive and in regular
follow-up, 10 of them free of relapse since the
transplantation. In the deceased patients the occurrence of
a relapse of the malignant disease was the main cause of
                      death.},
