%X Asthma is the most frequent allergic disease of children in Germany with multifactorial genesis. Former studies reported contrary results concerning the influence of migrant background or social state and children’s asthma respectively respiratory ailments. Partially studies revealed a positive, negative or even inverse relation.We report a cross-sectional study with 2451 children from the districts Aachen and Heinsberg. During the children’s primary school entry health examination all parents received a survey to answer several questions about the family’s general life conditions and their children’s respiratory symptoms or even asthma. Social state of the families was measured with questions about the parents’ education whereas migrant background was gathered with statements about the countries of birth. The surveys development was based on the ISSAC-study and contained 89 questions.Children whose mothers had a medium socioeconomic status were most likely to have asthma whereas children from families with migrant background suffered less frequent from asthma. Migrant background is a risk factor for low socioeconomic status.
