%X This study investigates the epidemiology and posttherapeutic quality of life of patients, who underwent an operative stabilization of an osseous or discoligamental instability of the cervical spine between 30.06.2000 and 23.03.2009 at the department of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery, University Hospital of Aachen. The clinical data of 89 patients was recorded and the patients’ subjective quality of life was assessed by questionnaires, including the validated questionnaires SF-36, the ODI and an investigator designed questionnaire. Cervical spine instabilities were mostly caused by different kind of trauma, including high velocity trauma as well as common falls; the later mentioned occurred particularly in older patients. On average, patients’ age was 54 years; mean age of women was older than age of men. Patients with an instability of the dens axis were older than patients with an instability of a vertebral body. Segments C2, C6 and C7 were most frequently affected. About 25
