abstract = {For the first time, this dissertation takes a look at a
                      heterogeneous group of profane migrant-initiated
architecture projects in Germany in a long-term perspective.
The focus is on the questions of whether immigrant-initiated
spaces have specific spatial features and if so, specific
for what; what connection applied spatial ideas have with
the respective migration histories; if it is possible to
learn from existing examples for design of architecture in a
diverse society and if so, what. In order to approach the
answers to these questions, works on the cultural studies of
spaces and cities and architectural science works on
typology will be brought together. The methodological
examination approach developed from this is used for three
case studies of cafe´s - ice cream salon, tea room and
shishabar, which as a group show respectively specific
spatial characteristics and have significantly been created
by the initiative of migrant builders and operators. Section
I orders and contextualizes existing, chiefly scientific
works on immigrant- initiated architecture projects in
Germany, subjects them to a discourse analysis and names
                      relevant topics, discussed topics, perspectivation,
presuppositions and possible alternatives. Section II
expands, on the basis of the results from Section I, the
repertoire of architecture-typological analysis tools and
concepts. Four formats are used or developed for the
                      examination: ground plan collection, typification,
typogenesis and reference framework. Section III applies the
four graphic analysis formats to the three case studies.
Architectural design interested in usage can find here a
great pool of transferable spatial elements and principles.
For design in diverse societies, the dynamic of cultural and
intercultural processes becomes visible, as well as a
continual search for spatial configurations within the
repertoire of architecture for respectively new and
heterogeneous social constellations. The initiators of the
examined case studies participate actively in this search -
the spaces they create are suggestions for this purpose. The
role of individual, determinable spatial elements and
principles appears to be a relevant topic in the process of
type creation. The type shows itself as a tool of
communication during the entire process, with the help of
which potentials in usage, individual spatial experiences
and spatial structure are put into relation to each other.
The categorizations of the typology are used to challenge
categories of macrosocial discourse, such as western -
Muslim or own - foreign, and instead to assign the examined
objects a place in the café landscape, the tactical and a
                      general place in city history.},
