abstract = {This dissertation presents the results of a study aimed at
investigating the impact of exposure to zinc- and copper
containing welding fumes on leukocytes and myeloperoxidase
(MPO), in light of known research demonstrating an effect on
the human organism like increased C-reactive protein (CRP)
levels subsequent to such exposures. In two distinct models,
blood samples from male volunteers were analyzed before and
after they were exposed to welding fumes: repeated exposure
on four consecutive days, each lasting 6 hours and single
exposures for 3, 4 or 5 hours each. An increase in
neutrophil granulocytes and MPO was observed 24 hours after
both, the single and repeated exposures lasting 6 hours.
This increase is comparable to the CRP increase already
described in the literature after exposure to welding fumes.
This investigation points to the involvement of neutrophil
granulocytes in metal fume fever and additionally
                      demonstrates their mediating effects.},
