Today, drivers are indispensable in each operational concept. The need of drivers does vary between the field of rail traffic: driverless vehicles are state of the art on some rail-based systems, e.g. in subways and people movers at airports. Those driverless systems differ significantly from railway operations which has an impact on the grad of automation. Due to increasing digitalization, driverless operations seem to be manageable in railway, too (in this work, driverless means Unattended Train Operation (UTO)).In this work, three different operational concepts with driverless vehicles will be presented. Therein, both pure operations and mixed operations are considered. In pure operations, the infrastructure is used exclusively by driverless vehicles. In contrast, both driverless and conventional vehicles run in mixed operations on the same infrastructure. The distinction has an impact on train and shunting movements. The operational effects of the created concepts can be analyzed for capacity assessment with the software tool LUKS®. If people accept driverless vehicles, operations with them seem to be possible. A survey came to the result that there is a certain level of acceptance towards driverless operations. The results of this work show that driverless railway operations are feasible. Although, there are certain challenges to be overcome. However, the technical requirements for driverless vehicles in particular are met.
