Global and regional economic trends constantly confront manufacturing and assembling companies with challenges to ensure their sustainable existence and continuation of their businesses. They face shorter product life cycles and increasing demand for customized as well as high-quality products at low prices. Accelerated competition and discontinuities in the markets (induced by war, pandemics, and climate crises) motivate to synchronize production and assembly systems with demand. The novel organizational paradigm of Line-less Mobile Assembly Systems (LMAS) promises to achieve this synchronization. However, LMAS is at an early stage of emergence in the innovation cycle. Therefore, this dissertation provides a definition and differentiation to established approaches (e.g. flexible or reconfigurable systems): Operations in LMAS are characterized by the quasi-continuous reconfiguration of production resources. Assembly stations are temporarily set up at favorable locations within an obstacle-free factory using location-flexible multi-purpose resources. To master system operations, this thesis provides a formal model for semantic and syntactic descriptions of the LMAS entities: resource, station, and factory. They exhibit self-similarities, because, in addition to lower-level LMAS entities, a type, a configuration, a state, a (transient) location, and a plan are assigned to each. Based on this formalism, a holarchical control system architecture is derived. It integrates the mobile multi-purpose resources, creates possibilities to instantiate temporary entities, consolidates system states, and is connected to a global planning unit. Local goals are derived from optimal global plans and assigned to the operational entities. The local goals are pursued autonomously and self-organized so that spatio-temporally transient assembly stations are constituted and the desired overall system behavior results synergistically. The core of the global planning unit is a mixed-integer linear decision model that exploits the available degrees of freedom and meets the planning complexity. The integral approach is based on the combination of a generic location and scheduling model, which is extended by the LMAS-specific constraints and decision variables. In addition to this LMAS Simultaneous Scheduling and Location model for predictive scheduling, a heuristic is developed. Without optimality, the heuristic provides global plans quickly and is utilized online in the control system. Accordingly, local disruptions (e.g. resource or station failures) can be handled quickly. The usefulness of the mixed-integer decision model and the heuristic are confirmed by the investigation of the conceptual and operational validity and by the computerized model verification. Experimental data sets were taken from industrial sewage pump assembly.
