A total of 26 filmic contributions were analyzed to examine how visual methodologies construct perceptions of heroin use and fill the concept of heroin addiction with specific attributes. These attributes associate heroin use with addiction, personal degradation, social disintegration, deviant behavior, and death. The analysis shows that a visual representation of heroin use, shaped by continuity and homogeneity, constructs knowledge that becomes institutionalized and widely accepted, thereby creating notions of normative and non-normative behaviors. These visualizations are stigmatizing and generate negative emotions and affects, which extend not only to heroin use but also to users themselves. The study thus emphasizes the need to critically assess the visual material used in drug and addiction prevention.
