This research encompasses a thorough investigation of chitosan itaconate, a bio-based multifunctional solution that enables both the coating and bonding of lignocellulosic materials. The orthogonal reactivity of itaconic acid allows for the protonation of the amino groups of chitosan, which first yields a water-soluble salt that is subsequently converted into a water-insoluble interpolyelectrolyte complex via thermally initiated radical polymerisation. The aqueous chitosan itaconate solutions are shear-thinning and thixotropic. They are easy to apply and polymerize into a transparent, strongly adhesive, and water-insoluble film. The aqueous chitosan itaconate salt solution penetrates approximately 400–1000 µm of lignocellulosic substrates. Within the substrate, chitosan and the second free carboxyl group of itaconic acid interact with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose through hydrogen bonds. These bonds act synergistically, resulting in a strong adhesion of the interpolyelectrolyte complex to the substrate. On lignocellulosic surfaces, the solution forms a hydrophobic (approx. 93°) film, which protects against UV-induced yellowing and everyday contamination, while significantly reducing flammability: a single application decreases the burning rate, and multiple applications completely prevent combustion. Wood-based materials and wood, natural construction materials with excellent mechanical properties and good environmental performance, are susceptible to moisture, UV radiation, contamination, and especially fire. Commercial systems provide protection and bond wood materials, but they are usually not biodegradable, may contain potentially harmful substances, and require additional additives to ensure flame-retardant properties. When used as an adhesive for solid wood, chitosan itaconate achieves high bond strengths, with cohesive failure occurring in the wood rather than in the adhesive joint during tensile shear testing. In the production of fiberboards with chitosan itaconate as binder, bending strengths of up to 77 N·mm⁻² are achieved, surpassing solid wood (approx. 70 N·mm⁻²) as well as conventional OSB boards (approx. 25 N·mm⁻²). Thus, chitosan itaconate, due to its easy applicability from aqueous solution, offers a powerful and bio-based alternative to conventional coating and binder systems and provides a concrete contribution to sustainability in construction.
