Note: Theory, experiment, and computer simulation define predictive science today. The physical, life science, and engineering systems being subjected to computational analysis or design are rapidly growing more complex at a rate that outpaces the improvements in hardware and software. The next generation in scientific computing cannot rely solely on improved hardware, but has to follow an integrated predictive approach based on the simulation tripod consisting of the three corner- stones: models, methods, and data. The full dynamic and hierarchical interaction between these cornerstones defines the concept of “Predictive Hierarchical Simulation (PHS),” which in the long term will result in an expert system to develop the ultimate tailored simulation process. This concept also belongs to the scientific core of the new JARA Center for Simulation and Data Science established by the Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University.
