Note: Das Internet – in seiner Bedeutung als weltweites sozio-technisches Netzwerk – hat die Verfügbarkeit von Daten und Wissen revolutioniert. Mit dem Konzept des Internets der Dinge (IoT für engl. "Internet of Things") wurde die Idee auf die physikalische Welt übertragen. Die direkte An-wendung des IoT-Ansatzes auf die Produktion ist derzeit nicht zielführend möglich, da die Pro-duktionstechnik durch wesentlich mehr Parameter, aber weniger verfügbare Daten als andere Big-Data-Domänen geprägt ist. Obwohl in der modernen Produktionstechnik große Mengen an Daten vorhanden sind, sind diese weder einfach zugänglich, interpretierbar, noch so vernetzt, dass daraus Wissen generiert werden kann. Dem Internet of Production (IoP) liegt die Vision zugrunde, ein neues Niveau der domänenübergreifenden Kollaboration zu ermöglichen, indem semantisch adäquate und kontextbezogene Daten aus Produktion, Entwicklung und Nutzung in Echtzeit und angepasster Granularität zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Den zentralen wissen-schaftlichen Ansatz hierfür stellen Digitale Schatten als anwendungsspezifisch aggregierte und multi-perspektivische Datensätze dar. Im Exzellenzcluster wird eine konzeptionelle Referenzinfrastruktur entworfen und implementiert, die die Generierung und Nutzung der Digitalen Schatten ermöglicht. Zur Umsetzung des Internet of Production haben sich Aachens renommierte Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus Produktionstechnik, Informatik, Werkstoffwissenschaften sowie der Wirtschaftswissenschaften formiert. Gemeinsam werden die interdisziplinären Herausforderungen, wie die Integration von reduzierten produktionstechnischen Modellen in datengetriebenes Machine Learning mit den Zielen eines domänenübergreifenden Wissensaufbaus sowie kontext-adaptiven Handlungen, adressiert. Das Internet of Production stellt die Basis für neue Methoden des ganzheitlichen Arbeitens dar, indem ingenieurswissenschaftliche Methoden und Prozesse entwickelt und verbessert werden. Hierfür ist ein integrierter Ansatz in der Produktionstechnik erforderlich. Aachen als Ausgangspunkt für das Internet of Production ist durch eine einzigartige Breite und ein herausragendes Ansehen in der Produktionsforschung geprägt, was auch durch die Ergebnisse des laufenden Exzellenzclusters "Integrative Produktionstechnik für Hochlohnländer" untermauert wird. Der RWTH Aachen Campus bietet einzigartige infrastrukturelle Voraussetzungen mit diversen Forschungsinstituten und industriellen Partnern zur integrativen Entwicklung und Validierung des Internet of Production. Die interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit der Forschungsteams wird u. a. durch die Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses im Rahmen einer Graduiertenschule unterstützt.
