In materials science, elasticity is the ability of a body to change its shape when subjected to a force and to return completely to its original shape as soon as this force is removed. According to the interpretation of textile technology, elasticity is the provision of stretch and recovery when required. Elasticity is essential for the functionality of many textiles. The most important option for the elastification of textiles is the use of so-called "elastanes", dry-spun filament yarns made from elastomeric polyurethanes. Their production volume amounted to approx. 1.23 million tonnes in 2023, with growth of approx. 6.4 % per year. Elastanes and the dry spinning processes used to produce them are fraught with challenges: Low production speeds, a dependence on crude oil due to fossil-based raw materials, the use of potentially harmful solvents, the disturbance of material recycling of thermoplastic textiles. The melt spinning of elastic filament yarns from thermoplastic polyurethanes is one approach to overcome these challenges. In this dissertation, the upscaling of the melt spinning of elastic multifilament yarns made from CO2-containing thermoplastic polyurethanes from Technological Readiness Level 2 to Technological Readiness Level 7 is investigated. To date, a yarn-yarn and yarn-component adhesion, which interferes with processing, insufficient mechanical yarn characteristics and unknown areas of application have prevented industrialisation and commercialisation. The adhesion is sufficiently reducible by the application of a spin finish that contains a specific salt as an active ingredient. Ideally the application of the spin finish with the specific salt is combined with an inline heat application during spinning respectively tempering of yarns on bobbins after spinning. The force-elongation-curve is adjustable to one of an elastane by draw-relaxation as well as by enabling of shrinking. Further processability is demonstrated by covered yarns, a lifestyle compression stocking and a sports shoe upper. On Technological Readiness Level 7, elastic multifilament yarns from CO2-containing thermoplastic polyurethanes having an elongation at the highest force of approx. 273 % are producible. The obtained knowledge is usable for industrialisation and commercialisation.
