Kurzfassung
Archaeological sites are not distributed evenly throughout the landscape. For the Palaeolithic record, signals derived from the inhomogeneous spatial patterns are used to infer spatial decision-making processes or ecological preferences of our ancestors. However, to date it is still largely unclear how sampling biases affect the large-scale distribution of sites and whether the observable spatial patterns are actually representative of the distribution of humans in the palaeo-landscape. To answer this question, this dataset containing geolocations of close to 4200 sites was used to assess the spatial distribution from two different perspectives, i.e., past settlement choice and likelihood of discovery. The dataset was compiled from available datasets on archaeological and palaeo-anthropological sites, initially for palaeo-demographic studies according to the Cologne Protocol. As we think that there is even greater potential in the site dataset that we have compiled, we are making it openly accessible for further studies. Refer to the main publication for an in-depth explanation of the dataset. This entry contains the geo-dataset on Upper and Final Palaeolithic sites compiled for the study of Boemke et al. 2023.
